Some say that in the early 1980s when the island was discovered, the abundance of turtles gave it its name, Turtle Island. Others say the name comes from its turtle-like shape when viewed from Ko Phangan.
Koh Tao is a famous diving destination. The dramatic coral landscapes are home to turtles, stingrays, reef sharks, barracudas and, if you are lucky enough to spot one, whale sharks. The abundant coral reef, both in shallow and deep waters, is a home to millions of sea creatures. Divers around the world come here specifically to experience the beauty of this paradise island.
What’s more, the island, which is the site of important breeding grounds for Hawksbill and Green turtles, is now a center for environmentally friendly diving practices. That includes the reintroduction of hundreds of juvenile turtles to the island’s ecosystem and efforts to preserve and nurture coral reefs.
Other activities include sailing, rock climbing, abseiling, cliff jumping, wakeboarding, kayaking, fishing, mini golf, hiking and mountain biking. There are also many cooking schools, yoga studios and Muay Thai camps on site.
The number of restaurants and nightlife to choose from has been continually growing, to the point that there is now something for almost every taste.
